Angel or Angelus – Buffy’s Vampire Lover and Arch-enemy

Angel: Lover or Arch-enemy of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Hero and Villain on his own

Josh Whedon’s creation: “Angel” is was the lover of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, as well as her Arch-Enemy when he was in the “Angelus” manifestation; and after spending over 150 years full of destruction and painful killing as a deadly vampire, he lead a life of redemption and bravery as a hero.

Angel is one of my favorite vampires ever. He was a merchants son in Galway, Ireland – a ne’er-do-well who still did not have evil intent. However, one dark evening in an alley he was seduced by the vampire Darla and was turned into a vampire.

And what an evil vampire he was! He spent over a century bringing pain and destruction to all he could touch. All this turned around when he was cursed by Gypsies with a SOUL – and he was racked by guilt about all evil he had done. The catch was that he could lose that protective soul if he had but one moment of true pleasure.

A formally evil vampire? A vampire hunter he happens to love? You can imagine what that time of true pleasure was.

The play between evil and good is what makes this series one of my favorite. But of course, there is Josh Whedon’s sense of humor and imagination, as well as the memorable characterizations that made the Buffy and Angel series ones to remember. I am sure you could be a fan, and if not, I betcha there is someone on your gift-giving list who is.

The Angel TV Show is One of my Favorites!

Angel: The Complete SeriesAngel: The Complete Series

The Angel series, which expanded on the characters we met in Buffy: Angel the vampire with a soul, Cordelia, Wesley, Harmony and Spike and well as introducing us to an evil law firm Wolfram and Hart, many monsters and supernatural villains and new heroes like Gunn, and Illyria is a fascinating kingdom of it’s own.

This 6.5 inch action fiction is Angel in his hero manifestation. He has the wonderful full length leather coat that he is ready to fight evil with his sword. He is standing on a base with the letter “B” which is of course for Buffy. Also included in this action figure is the Irish Claddagh ring that he had given to Buffy as a sign of their deeply felt but tragic love.

Two vampires in love with a slayer: who really loves both of them. Will the cookie dough (another inside joke) Buffy chose either one of them?

Claddagh Ring – The Beautiful Irish Ring that Angel Gave to Buffy

The ring is one that he gave Buffy as a sign of his eternal love and devotion. Claddagh rings are (Irish: fáinne Chladaigh) traditional Irish rings given representing love, loyalty, and friendship. The hands represent friendship, the crown loyalty – and the heart represents love.

These rings are all special. Some are available in birthstones, in different sizes, some are made in Ireland or personalized. And they all are beautiful.

Angelus – The Evil Side of Angel

Angelus was the arch-enemy of Buffy the Vampire Slayer because he was pure evil and destruction who killed for the joy of it for over 150 years. He was the most evil vampire that the world had ever seen – the darling of the Master and the lover of the the even more evil Darla.
Angel had lived over 240 years, the most of it as an evil killer. So he had known many women, and had many, many lovers.
But he only had one love: Buffy Summers, who was also the vampire slayer of Sunnydale, CA a fictitious town similar to Santa Cruz. It was on a Hellmouth where all kinds of ghouls and goblins, demons and vampires lived and lurked.
During Angels time as the dreaded Angelus, he made the poor decision of killing a Gypsy girl that was the treasure of her people. As a curse they gave him back his soul, and in one horrible moment he knew all the evil and horror that he had done in his time as a vampire. He became “Angel” instead of “Angelus”, and for many years lived lower than a beast in the shame and remorse of what he had done. He was cursed with guilt: and also with a curse that if he was ever to experience even one of true happiness he would revert back to the evil Angelus.
Angel and Buffy was doomed to always be apart, if they were joined in love he would convert to Angelus. Unfortunately that is exactly what did happen, and after Angel and Buffy made love for the first time, he converted back into the horrible Angelus and wreaked pain and murder until the city until Buffy was able to kill him and he was sent to a hell dimension.

Angel is One of my Favorite Vampires

Spike from the Buffyverse would be one as well. I only recently got any favorites because I wasn’t interested in vampires, but after becoming a Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan a few years ago, I definitely am. I have binged watched the “Angel” series as well as “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.”

Why the fascination? Well, this series is character driven not just a silly rock it sock em action driven. If you become a Buffy or Angel fan you will watch the characters grow and develop and touch upon evil and good and what makes a person a person, what it means to have a soul and what it means to care about others.

I really love it when characters I follow change in a series, and no one does that more than Angel.

Hilarious and Spooky Episode where Angel becomes a Puppet

It’s Smiletime!

Can Angel be a puppet? He is in Smiletime, one of the most clever episodes in the Angel series.

In this episode Angel is turned into a puppet by an evil puppets who is controlling children and creating an evil mystical smiling disease. They are able to turn Angel into a puppet, which was hilarious except it made him crime fighting harder!

Spike teased him mercilessly – and his new werewolf girlfriend Nina accidently tore him up when she turned.

Poor puppet Angel.

Angel

Angel was Part of a Tragic Love with Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Their’s Was an Eternal Love that Could Never Be

Angel had lived over 150 years, so he had known many women, and had many, many lovers.

He had his soul restored, but he was never able to have Buffy as the lover he desired out of fear of losing his soul again. But nothing changed the love they had for each other.

The most precious gift that Angel gave Buffy was the claddagh ring.

I am a Total Buffyverse Fan: Do you Know who sired Who?

am an Angel, Buffy, Spike, Drusilla, Darla fanatic. I can tell you what vampire was sired by who: Spike was sired by Drusilla who was sired by Angel who was sired by Darla who was sired by the Master. I have seen Angel and Spike fight at various Armageddons over and over and I have seen Willow the Witch good and bad.

I have seen every episode of Angel and Buffy the Vampire Slayer many times. My son Ben and I join in this obsession. These shows are sexy, sensitive, heart-warming, hilarious, terrifying and memorable. I loved watching the characters grow and develop, like in no other TV series I have ever seen.

I am normally a sane person.

Check out this series of creatures of the night and day to see why I would go over the edge.

The Character of Angel went through two series: both Buffy and Angel

Angel was introduced as a love interest in Buffy the Vampire Slayer – but he was no boy next door. Soon she realized that the dark stranger had a very big dark secret: he was a vampire. Now normally Buffy would have disposed of him quickly in a pouf of dust without a second thought: decapitated him, pushed him into the sunlight so he would go on fire, or just given him a good old fashioned staking. She after all was the Vampire Slaying – and technically he needed a slaying. But Angel was different – he had been CURSED with a soul, which meant that he had a total recognition of all the evil he had done for hundreds of years as a vampire. And there was no relief in sight – if he had one minute of total happiness he reverted to his old soul-less vampire self Angelus. That happened the first time he made love to Buffy, leaving Buffy with the unenviable position of having to kill the man she loved.

Not to provide too much of a spoiler, but that is not the end of Angel. How he is made good again, and how he became a true hero was the source of much of his character in the Buffy series, as well as the basis to this spin-off series “Angel.” Angel eventually moved to Los Angeles – the City of Angels. There with a cast of characters that included the snooty girl “Cordelia” from the original Buffy series, a ghetto kid vampire slayer, a brilliant lady scientist, a fired vampire watcher Wesley, and an emphatic demon form a detective group that helps foks who have been attacked by the frequent supernatural threats: ghosts, demons, and vampires that live in the City.

My second dark hero is also a vampire from this series: “Spike.” Spike was once a poet, and a mother’s boy, but he was turned bad by Drusilla. They rampaged through Europe for years and years, and Spike had the distinction of having killed two slayers in his time. He is gradually developed into a quirky, hilarious but loving bad boy – and I won’t spoil it by telling you how.

This two villains that are sometimes heroes are active members of both Angel and Buffy the Vampire Slayer and both are totally worth watching. When I was rewatching these series I was amazed at how fresh and creative the characters were. Josh Whedon allowed them a full range of emotions, and sometimes they were totally funny. There were some completely comical scenes – and some tragic ones as well.

Much of the dialogue – especially Angel’s was improvised.

I hope you do yourself a favor and pick up Angel as well as the original Buffy series.

Angel Seasons Three, Four and Five

Angel’s Mystical Son, Cordelia’s Frightening Changes, Meet Fred from Pylea

Can a vampire have children? No. So when he DOES you know that it has mystical qualities. Can Cordelia handle her visions and the resultant headaches that come with them? Not without becoming a little demon herself, with bad results all around. What happens when the empath demon Loren performs in a nightclub in Las Vegas? Mayhem all around as well as great entertainment! And add a trip to Planet Pylea that brings back a new fascinating female lead Fred.

Season Five ends the series and you will not believe where Angel, Wesley, Gunn, and Fred are working. It brings back one of the series favorites: a bleached blonde vampire by the name of Spike.

The last offering is all five seasons of Angel.

How will it end? I don’t want to give it away, but let’s just say it involves a good fight.

Angel or Angelus – a Memorable Vampire that you MUST Meet

In my book Buffy’s love was Angel, a vampire that because of his depth and what he proved about redemption is one that you must meet. Angel, or Angelus he is one of the most powerful vampires in history.

A Wee Little Puppet Angel!

Josh Whedon created many amazing and creative episodes and one of the best was Smiletime – where Angel gets turned into a Puppet. Don’t ask – you’ll have to watch the series!

Vampire History and Folklore

Angel and Spike are one of a Long Line of Beings of Darkness

The belief in those poor tortured creatures known as vampires has existed for hundreds of years. For the truth of the matter is, even though vampires cause suffering they cause most of the suffering to themselves.

Was the belief in these creatures inspired by the bats of the same name? Did they just remind us of long-toothed relatives? We have believed in them since pre-historic times, although they were popularized in the 1800’s in Europe, especially with Bram Stoker’s Dracula.

We fear them, but we should pity them. Living shadowy existence, having seriously co-dependent relationships at best, hanging out in coffins, having bats for pets – what kind of life is that?

1999 Buffy the Vampire Slayer Action Figure Series 1 - The Master1999 Buffy the Vampire Slayer Action Figure Series 1 – The Master1999 Buffy the Vampire Slayer Action Figure Series 1 - The Master

The Master was one of the Oldest Vampires in existence. The Grand-daddy of them all: he sired Darla, who sired Angel, who sired Drusilla, who sired Spike. All the main vampires in the series had a link to the Master. He was the main villain for Buffy in Series One of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. He mourned when Angelus was given a soul, he had hoped that they could rule the underworld together. Exiled underground, he was surrounded by candleabras like in this collectible action figure.

Angel or Angelus was Tremendously Powerful

Before he was turned into a vampire he was “Liam” an Ireland resident that amounted to little. However, once he turned; the vampire that was Angel or Angelus was a source of tremendous power for good or evil. “Angel” is was the lover of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, as well as her Arch-Enemy when he was in the “Angelus” manifestation; and after spending over 150 years full of destruction and painful killing as a deadly vampire, he lead a life of redemption and bravery as a hero, saving the world more than once.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer – The Greatest Love of Angel’s Long 200 Year Life

Both Heroes against Evil, Both Part of a Doomed Love

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Series 1 – BUFFY – Sarah Michelle Gellar – 6

No discussion of Angel is complete without mentioning Buffy Summers, the strongest and smartest vampire slayer the world has ever seen. Josh Whedon had said that he wanted to create a series with a strong female hero, and he certainly did here. Through the Buffy series and as she made guest appearances on Angel, she developed as a person, a friend and family member and a hero.

Her character, like all of Josh Whedon’s main characters, was never flat. She fought temptation and gave in sometimes and truly became a woman as she aged.

This is a quite representative action figure of the unbeatable Buffy. Armed with the tools of her trade, Buffy the Vampire Slayer is prepared for action. Based on the popular television series, this six-piece plastic set includes a stand, a 5.75-inch-tall figure, crossbow with attached bolts, a dagger, and two wooden stakes. A typical teen by day, Buffy is dressed in formfitting jeans, boots, and leather jacket; with movable legs, arms, and head, the figure can be posed atop the small oval stand. Ready for nighttime action, her hands are formed to hold a combination of deadly weapons used against vampires and demons. Components have sharp edges and care must be taken during unpacking and assembly. Several of the pieces are quite small and can be a choking hazard; this is not a toy for young children. This action figure is beautiful, and perfect for any Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel fans.

This is another view of Buffy that is highly collectible.

The first season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer was very special. In “Prophecy Girl” Buffy faces a clear, ancient prophecy from mystical texts that she will face the Master and die. Will she emerge victorious or die a hero at age 16?

The action figure from Moore Collectibles includes Buffy in a hot outfit of a black leather jacket and sexy top and skirt in a gift box.

This Dark Angel is just part of my Fandom

I never thought I would become a Buffy the Vampire Slayer Fan – but I became a fanatic one , and in spite of promising myself I would avoid watching the companion series Angel about the vampire with a soul I ended up watching it obsessively as well. Why did this happen? I mean until last year I hadn’t even watched Dracula, I hadn’t got the Twilight bandwagon, and I had never read an Anne Rice novel. What was so intriguing about Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Angel her vampire with a soul boyfriend was that both series developed their characters throughout the series and you never knew what you were going to get! Evil was not just evil – sometimes it was good, and sometimes the good turned evil as well. So therefore it is fitting that Angel is home to two of my favorite TV anti-heroes of all time: Angel himself and his arch nemesis and sometimes friend “Spike.” Both are vampires that are gifted with eternal life and amazing strength – but deprived of their souls. Both are capable of incredibly cruel violence which we witness, as well as amazing acts of virtue when they are “good.”

  1. Awesome nugget, so much information. I loved both series and sometimes still watch them today just for a bit of fun.

  2. Never heard of the series “Angel” yet these gifts look great for all fans – and even for not fans (like me). The rings and the collectible figurines are my favorites in this list. So which one am I gonna start with? Hm…

  3. Super gifts for Angel fans !

  4. I started watching Angel about halfway through its run. I didn’t have a favorite character particularly, but I’m pleased to see Christian Kane on The Librarians now. And of course, I can still see David Boreanaz on Bones, which I’ve enjoyed since it started. :) Great idea and I enjoyed reading it!
