Autumn Season is Lovely for a Wedding

Enhance Your Autumn Wedding With the Rich Colors of Fall

The colors of autumn make a beautiful combination when you are planning a wedding. Rich autumn colors include burgundy, deep reds, rusts, wine, burnt orange, orange-yellows, mustard yellow, yellow-green, and gold.

As the summer comes to a close, we can enjoy the harvest time and family gatherings which increase in the fall as children go back to school. An autumn wedding can be blended with themes of the season, of fall holidays such as Halloween and Thanksgiving, or of the bounty of the earth at this time of year.

All of these are wonderful themes to blend together for a lovely autumn wedding. This page is a jumping off point to help inspire you to create your unique event.

Dressing for the Autumn Wedding

Since autumn is cooler than spring or summer, it helps to have a wedding dress that is lightweight enough for a warm fall day, yet warm enough for a cooler evening. If you or your bridesmaids will be wearing strapless gowns, be sure to also include matching stoles, wraps, or capes to drape over your shoulders for later in the evening.

Where Should You Have the Wedding?

If you live in a climate that has beautiful fall colors, you may want to consider having your wedding out of doors. Some outdoor locations that would suit this autumn wedding idea would be: a rustic farm, a country inn, an apple orchard, a vineyard, or a nearby park. If you are worried about the weather, you can hire a tent, and even rent heaters to keep it warm enough.

Whether you live in a area with natural fall colors or not, you can still create a spectacular autumn wedding indoors. With colored accents and appropriate decorations, you can easily bring the outdoors inside.

Autumn Wedding Table Decor and Centerpieces

You can make your own centerpieces and wedding favors or you can buy them. Here are some ideas to make them yourself.

Create leaf candle wraps for a simple table centerpiece. Buy pillar candles in suitable autumn colors. Next, you’ll need to find a vase, large glass or other glass container that is large and tall enough to hold the candle (but not too large circumference wise). Using a 3″ wide ribbon, cut it so it wraps around the glass container, overlapping a bit. Secure with a glue gun. Glue 2 or 3 fabric leaves to the front of the ribbon. Wrap contrasting colored, thin ribbon or raffia around the wider ribbon and tie in the front over the leaves (to hide where they are glued). Set on the tables.

Fill woven baskets with fall leaves. Tie a pretty rust or orange-red ribbon to the handle for an inexpensive centerpiece.

Buy leaf shaped hole punches and punch out your own leaf confetti from autumn colored papers. Sprinkle the confetti on the tables.

Make your own foliage arrangements using rustic planters, copper toned buckets or woven baskets as your container.

If you would rather buy centerpieces, there are many affordable choices for you. Or you can buy parts of the decorations and put them together to save money.

Personalized Fall Leaves Make a Nice Touch

Personalized Fall Leaf Petals

You can take the leaf petals idea a step farther with personalized leaves. These personalized fall leaf petals can be used in various ways. They can be used instead of petals for the flower girl, added to centerpieces on the tables, decorate a buffet table or act as coasters for drinks.

Setting the Tone for Your Autumn Wedding

Autumn weddings can be either formal or informal. A formal wedding can easily have elements of an autumn theme without sacrificing the formality of the event. Using more formal color combinations is one way to achieve this goal. A few color combinations that can be considered both formal and autumnal are: burgundy and hunter green, and wine and navy blue. These colors can be used throughout the wedding party, invitations and other wedding decorations.

A casual wedding is just as simple to create. You can set the tone with color combinations such as rust and kelly green or buttercup and burnt orange. Another way to set the tone of an informal fall wedding is by using decorations that reflect the casual atmosphere. Hay bales, pumpkins or fall leaves can be used. In light of the fact that autumn is such a varied season, your only limit is your imagination. You can use any of the elements that you enjoy, and your wedding and reception will reflect those things you enjoy about the season.

Calla Lillies Make Lovely Centerpieces

This cally lily arrangement is another simple way to create centerpieces for tables. It is very versatile and comes in several colors. If calla lilies are not your flower of choice, there are many others that can come in silk arrangements that can be used again for another affair.

Autumn Wedding Decorating Ideas

One of the easiest ways to incorporate the autumn wedding theme into your ceremony is by adding small touches that reflect autumn. One idea is to use a pew bow comprised of printed ribbon with fall themes instead of the traditional white. This can range from prints of leaves to prints of pumpkins. For a more formal event, wide burgundy or hunter ribbon edged in gold can be used. Fall colors can be used in floral arrangements and a variety of fall flowers can be used as well. Finally, the wedding attendants can wear colors that reflect those of the season.

Grapevine wreaths can be used on wall spaces at the ceremony or reception site. You can reuse the decorative items used for the ceremony as decorations for the reception. Bows can be tied to terracotta pots and filled with miniature pumpkins or colored leaves for centerpieces.

Pumpkins, Squash and Gourds

Use pumpkins, squash and gourds for extra decorative touches. They can be used by themselves or can be decorated for the wedding. One idea is painting pumpkins or squash with a gold wash, then carving hearts and flowers into the flesh.

If you would like to include leaves, these can be painted with gold or silver as well.
