What to consider when buying a bassinet mattress

You wouldn’t just go into a store and buy any mattress for yourself, you test it out, read recommendations and so on, and you should give the same consideration to buying one for a bassinet. Sad to say, not all the mattresses that come with your new bassinet live up to a standard you really want, so you might want to check that before you purchase. It you just can’t resist the look of one, no problem, you can usually buy a more suitable one to fit. Then of course there may come a time when you need to replace an existing mattress.

Safety
Make sure any mattress you buy is fire retardant. That said, you have to be really careful which to choose. Watch out for some imported mattresses as many still use dangerous levels of fire retardant chemicals that are banned in the US. Foam mattresses are generally ok but check with the manufacturer’s literature to make sure they don’t have any chlorinated tris – a chemical banned from children’s clothes because it is known to cause cancer. Stick to natural organic materials when you can, most will be hypoallergenic so they won’t harbor bed mites, dust or bacteria that baby might be allergic to.

Fit
This is also a safety consideration, your mattress should fit the bassinet perfectly. You shouldn’t be able to get more than one finger between the edge of the mattress and the edge of the bassinet. This will make sure your baby can’t get her face, hands, arms, legs or anything else stuck if she rolls over. I know at an early age they don’t move all that much but you can’t be too careful.

Brand name
Use a well known and well respected brand names. You want to be sure you have a good quality product that you can trust. If you don’t recognize the name – don’t buy it no matter what the price is.

Firmness
Your baby will rest best on a firm mattress. The days of soft mattresses should be well past us now, but just check to make sure.

Thickness
When it comes to how thick you want it to be, you probably want at least 2 inches thick. And check the density of foam mattresses – they should be in the region of 1.5 pounds per cubic foot. A word about memory foam mattresses – these are very popular at the moment but do remember the older ones are not breathable and your baby can get too hot on them. Look for the more modern ones that combine air pockets for better ventilation.
