What You Need to Be Prepared for the Coming Winter

There is a Good Chance the Coming Winter Will Be Severe

What should you do? Prepare now! If you prepare now, then you will not need to worry if bad weather occurs, or if you lose power. It will not be necessary to try to get what you need at the store while everyone else is trying to do the same thing. You will not need to go out in bad weather to try to obtain the items you need to keep you and your family safe, warm and fed, should the weather force you to stay home and indoors for the duration of a severe storm.

Prepare now, and you can relax, knowing that you have taken all the precautions necessary to keep you and your loved ones safe. But what do you need to keep your family safe? What should you have in order to make sure that everyone makes it through an emergency situation as comfortably as possible? Below are my recommendations for items I know work well.

If There is a Power Outage During a Winter Storm, What Will You Need?

Light

If you lose power during a snow storm, you are going to need light. Even during the day, you will need to cover your windows with blankets to keep out the cold, so a light source is very important. There are many means to create light, but I keep three sources of light with my emergency supplies: candles, flashlights and oil lamps.

Flashlights and candles are fine in the short term, but oil lamps offer the longest lasting light that is also safer since the flame is behind glass and therefore less likely to accidentally start a fire.

An Alternative Heat Source

Make Sure it is Safe to Use Indoors

If your home heat is electric or your furnace has an electric ignition, you will lose heat during a power outage. This can be catastrophic when it is bitter cold outside. You need another source of heat, right away.

The first thing you need to do is choose a room of your home to stay in. Rooms with the least amount of exterior walls are best. Tape blankets in front of any exterior windows to keep out the cold. Move the furniture to the walls and set up your heater in the middle of the room. Cover the floor around the heater with more blankets to insulate it.

The most important thing to know about heaters is NEVER use a heater inside that is meant to be used outside, like a BBQ grill or a garage torpedo heater. Fumes from these heaters can overcome and kill you. Make sure whatever heater you choose is safe to use inside. My recommendation for an indoor emergency heater is the Mr. Heater Buddy, but there are lots of other heaters that you can use.

A Means of Communication with the Outside World

Radio with Phone Charger or Solar Charger

Keeping tabs on what is going on outside your house is a very important thing. A battery operated radio, or a crank radio is a good solution, or if you have any periods of sunlight, a small solar charger is a great solution to keep your phone and tablet charged.

Warm Clothing

Socks, Gloves, Hats and Long Underwear

I have found that wool is the warmest when it comes to socks, gloves and hats. In long underwear, Under Armour is the absolute best you can buy. With these items as a base, layer your clothing over them for best heat retention.

Blankets and Sleeping Bags

Space and Mylar Blankets

Mummy style sleeping bags are the best for keeping in body heat, but the ones that you can zip all the way open are great for laying on the floor for insulation. Wool blankets are also great insulation for windows or the floor. Space blankets and mylar blankets are great for reflecting body heat or heat from your alternative heat source, and they are small and easy to store.

Food and Water

I Store Augason Farms Emergency Food, but Any Will Do

I keep a 3 month supply of emergency food buckets on hand all the time. I like it because you do not have to worry about it spoiling, since it has a 20 year shelf life. It is also easy to cook, all you need is hot water. However, if you don’t want to use emergency food, you should have a large stock of canned good, pasta, beans, rice and other items that will see you through, should you be stuck at home in a storm. Don’t forget, if you store canned goods, you will need to rotate them, as most canned goods only have a two year shelf life and you don’t want to find them spoiled when you need them the most.

  1. These are excellent suggestions for emergency preparedness stores to prepare for Winter. I would also include water purification tablets and/or a way to boil water. :)
