Buffy the Vampire Slayer Fans Totally Rock!

I definitely am late to the game – since Buffy the Vampire Slayer went off the air in 2003 – but ten years late – I have become a total fan! And I am not the only one. Until I watched Buffy I didn’t even realize that vampires were cool, and that the universe that grew up around them was fascinating.

Before I knew it I was watching episode after episode, and thinking at work about teen-age girl who had been chosen by the powers that be to kill vampires and demons – who had a “Watcher” dedicated just for her, and about the loyal group of friends who stuck beside her to help her.

Now I know the world of Buffy and Angel, and the world of fandom: conventions, action figures and post series books.

Ready for a spooky marathon of Buffy? The first DVD group features all of the episodes series in one collection . Here is the complete series from the first episode to the thrilling conclusion. Out-takes and commentary add to the richness.

In the first season we meet all the primary characters: Buffy who would love to be a regular teenage girl but finds that she has a destiny as a Slayer, Willow, the shy bookworm who is to become a powerful witch, everybody’s friend Xander. We also meet all of the important recurring vampires: the mysterious sometimes heroic sometimes demonic Angel, Angel’s sire Darla, Spike the impish vampire, Drusilla the lovely vampire beauty who also has the problem of being psychic – and insane. Many of the plot lines which become very significant start in this season as little seeds. The big villain in the first season is the Master. The first season is one of the most fun.

The second season develops the characters more deeply, as one of the characters goes through a major change and becomes a the major villain of the season. Werewolf Oz becomes the love of Willow the witch’s life, and tension grows to tragedy as Buffy finds that duty is more important than love.

The third season introduces another Slayer “Faith.” She is the naughty to Buffy’s nice, and the tension between them goes on through the season. Here we have the introduction of the ex-revenge demon Anya. The villain here is the Mayor, who was very enjoyable to watch because he was so innocent on the surface and so evil through and through. One of my favorite episodes “Band Candy” was in the third season. There adults throughout Sunnydale behave like immature teenagers after they eat cursed candy, which includes a lot of sex, drugs and rock and roll!

In the fourth season the Sunnydale “Scooby Gang” (Buffy and her vampire fighting friends) are off to college. Besides the inevitable estrangement that the feel there are new threats and development as they fight them. There is also more love in the air with Willow’s new love Tara. The “Big Bad” is a mechanical monster “Adam.”

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Action Figure: Prophecy Girl

The first season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer was very special. In “Prophecy Girl” Buffy faces a clear, ancient prophecy from mystical texts that she will face the Master and die. Will she emerge victorious or die a hero at age 16?

Willow the Witch: Nerdy School-Girl to Vampire to Evil Witch to Goddess

These action figures show my favorite character: Willow. This brainy, shy girl becomes Buffy’s best friend and a trusted ally. She comes into her own as she discovers witchcraft and falls in love with Tara – another witch.

These action figures show her transformation: from geeky school-girl who could not get a date, to vampire to beginner witch who could barely make a pencil fly, to evil witch who almost destroyed the world to the White Goddess that prevented Armageddon. You will have to see the series to figure out the details.

Gradually that changed, and he started using his vampire power to help people. When he meet Buffy, because she inspired him, he became one even more so. He became a hero! They fought demons and monsters together, all the time falling more in love. Angel pledged his life to her, and gave her a magical Claddagh ring, which an Irish symbol of friendship, loyalty and love as a token.

Until one fateful night when they did what all lovers do: made love and achieved true love and true happiness. When that happened, he awakened a curse that gypsies had done to him many years ago that would force him back into Angelus when he he achieved joy.

He became happy for one moment – and got punished big time! Due to the agony he had caused a family of gypsies when he was an evil vampire , he had to revert to Angelus. Angel became the evil Angelus again, and tragically eventually Buffy had to kill him.

Angel/Angelus figures are becoming rare, due to the time that has passed since the show and the renewal of interest in the series because of the 20 year reunion in 2017

I found two action figures of the Angel/Angelus character. The first does not show the evil Angelus – it shows the sweet (but broody, noble hero Angel. The second figure showed his vampire face, which is as close as I could find to Angelus.

A Special Musical Episode of Buffy – Once More with Feeling

Josh Whedon was highly experimental with his work. Two of his episodes were especially unique in their style: one with “Hush” which was totally wordless, and the second was “Once More with Feeling” from season six in which all the actors sang and danced. This video is from that episode.

The fifth season starts off with a tremendous shock as we meet a new player – Buffy’s sister. The villain in this season is one of the most terrifying ones of the series to me, the beautiful, invincible and completely sadistic Glory. Spike is developed during this season. The climax and beautiful but tragic.

The sixth season of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer is the darkest, most twistiest season of the series ever. Apparently Sarah Michelle Gellar did not like it because the lines between good and evil were blurred so. What does it say about me that this is one of my favorites?

In the seventh season, the world of the Sunnydale is becoming more and more terrifying. Evil is becoming more concentrated in the Original Evil “The First.” Will the world keep going on?

Vampires are Totally Scary

Until I became a fan I never realized what a threat vampires are.

Vampires are incredibly strong and ferocious beings. They can only walk the night, because direct sunlight can kill them along with wooden stakes through the heart and beheading. They can be injured by bullets, but not killed. They heal amazingly well.

Vampires are soul-less – because they once were humans, died and now have been turned into vampires through the bite of another. Vampires feed on human, and they do not always turn their prey into other vampires. Quite often they just “feed” on their blood and then kill the humans. If they do want to turn them into vampires, the other person will have to drink of the vamp’s blood as well. For instance when Darla turned Angel into Angelus she drank from his neck and then scratched her bosom until she drew blood and made him drink.

Anyone with the right technique can kill a vampire as I mentioned before. However, Buffy is special she is a “Chosen One” born into every generation with a special calling to kill vampires, as well as special strength and an ability to sense their presence.

The Slayer will have a Watcher to help her and train her in marital arts, weapons and in understanding the ways of the vampires in order to defeat them. In Buffy’s case that is Giles, a man chosen by the Watcher’s Council to help her. He comes into Buffy’s life as the school librarian.

Buffy the Vampire Slayers Still Live in their Own Hellmouth

Any Buffy the Vampire Slayer Fan would appreciate the gifts I have found: from the series itself to the action figures to the posters. You have to realize that Buffy fans live in their own private Hellmouth and they never get enough.

You have to realize that although vampires can show up anywhere Sunnyvale was a special place because it was exactly onto a Hellmouth. Much as Sedona AZ is a center of vortexes of good vibes, Sunnyvale is a convergence of evil spirits of all kinds, most who live underground the city premises. That makes it a real hotbed of all kind of demonic activity and whenever a megalomaniacal evil being decided to throw their own personal Armageddon – you would know that Sunnydale was on the map.

There was reportedly another Hellmouth in Cleveland, and the idea has taken off in our culture. Vile methane smells coming from under the Earth in Torrance, CA have some residents wondering if it is the real Hellmouth.

Although other people are sure that someone needs to alert Buffy, actually the Hellmouth is in Turkey. There is it believed that they have found the real gates of Hell.

Well, like I said in the first place evil forces get around.

But wherever they are, we can have hope as long as Buffy the Vampire Slayer is around.
