Need a Gag Gift? Try a Chia Pet!
Chia Pets Add Humor to Gift Giving
My husband and I recently had a contest to see how many gag gifts from the 70’s and 80’s were still available to buy. We started listing all of the gifts that we could remember from television commercials and one of the first ones we came up with was the Chia Pet.
Chia pets became a fad in 1977, when I was still in high school. What is remarkable is that they are still around, and they still make great gifts for humorous occasions.
The concept is very simple. Take a terracotta form, soak it in water, then brush chia seeds on it. The seeds sprout and become the hair or fur on the figurine.
The newest Chia Pet to join a veritable smorgasbord of choices is the Chia Zombie. This page lists some of the more popular Chia Pets available to purchase today.

Joseph Enterprises
The original Chia Pet was a ram, but Joseph Enterprises has made Chia Pets in many shapes since the concept’s inception. In recent years, chia seeds have been sold by themselves as a health additive for nutritional benefits, weight loss, and digestive aids with similar benefits to flax seeds. Chia seeds are a source of Omega-3, which has many known health benefits.
You might also remember another product of Joseph Enterprises called the Clapper which had a slogan of Clap On, Clap Off! These products were advertised on TV, especially during the holiday season. If you are lucky, you might still see some of the original commercials on TV even today.
