Owning a dog is a joy and your pet is like any other part of the family, he has needs just like everyone else. If you have owned your dog from when he was a puppy then most likely you and the other members of your household are the only family he knows.
It’s a big responsibility and your dog needs you to do the things for him that he cannot do for himself. Everyone knows that owning an animal means you must feed them, take care of them, walk them and most importantly love them. Most pet owners do all this but one aspect of owning a dog that pet owners are most likely to forget is their dogs hygiene and part of that is making sure your dogs teeth are brushed, his nails are cut or trimmed and his coat is kept neat and trim. Apart from clipping and making your dog look great, he will feel great and be healthier as well.
Dogs can suffer from many ailments that can go unnoticed for quite some time if his hygiene is neglected, such as skin conditions including allergies, parasites and more. Even more important that your dog’s coat is your dog’s nails. Neglecting these can lead to expensive vet bills and much pain for your pet.
Below we will look at all the different options for trimming your dogs coat and nails, how to do it, why you should keep on top of it and how you can easily achieve the best results at home. Included are products for this purpose such as hair and nail trimmers and clippers.

How & Why You Should Trim Your Dogs Nails
Just like people, dogs nails grow all the time. For humans this is not a problem. We can easily cut them any time we want but for a dog it’s a completely different story. If your dog is very active and spends a lot of time outdoors his nails may naturally stay trim as they wear on different surfaces but house dogs and dogs that are not very active can suffer from overgrown nails. Soft surfaces like grass will not wear the nails down sufficiently.
When dogs nails get too long it can cause a lot of discomfort for your dog, even worse if they are left long and they keep growing, they can curl under your dogs foot and actually stick into the pad making walking painful for your dog.
Dog’s nails are different in other ways too. They have a quick, a blood vessel that grows along with the nail. The longer the nail, the longer the quick. If you clip through the quick you can hurt your dog and cause bleeding. You do not want this to happen.
How to Tell if Your Dogs Nails are Too Long
This is very easy to do. You should not be able to hear your dog’s nails clipping off the ground when he is walking and when he is standing still his nails should not be touching the ground. If they are they are too long.
Light and Dark Nails
Light nails are the easiest to trim because you can easily see the quick through the nail, it will look red inside the nail and you should only cut before the quick. Dark nails are harder to see. The quick looks white inside but you cannot see it from outside the nail. You can however still cut the nails by taking a small amount off at the tip and looking face on to the nail. You can continue to do this until you see a feint white spot in the center. When you see this spot you need to stop.
Cutting Nails that are too Long
Some dog owners make the mistake of simply cutting a long nail short immediately, this cuts through the quick. Instead you should cut a little off each week until you have the desired results. When the nail is shorter the quick is shorter so each week you will be reducing the length of the nails and the quick will shorten in response.
How to Trim Your Dogs Nails
There are two main ways to do this, by clipping with a dog nail cutter or by grinding the nails. There are special tools to use to cut dog’s nails. You should not try to do the job with anything else. They are designed for the job and dogs nails are much harder than humans.
Below you can find some of the most popular trimmers and clippers available.
Best Dog Nail Trimmers & Grinders
Nail grinders are great for when you want to reduce the length of your dogs nails over time. It works well if your dogs nails have become too long as you can grind the nail down over several weeks without any fear of cutting through the quick.
For ordinary nail care for a dog whose nails are not too long, a clipper should be fine for the job for keeping them trim and short.

Trimming Dogs Nails
How & Why You Should Trim Your Dogs Hair
Trimming your dogs coat is not as essential as keeping their nails trim but it is important for your dogs comfort if your dog has long hair and it gets matted easily.
A matted coat can be uncomfortable for your dog. It can be caused by too little brushing or bathing, uneven hair growth and other factors.
When their hair is matted it will not allow air to circulate properly to your dogs skin and can result in the skin getting too warm, irritated or red. Skin conditions can also occur. If your dog is prone to skin conditions or is difficult to bath, then it is a good idea to keep his hair trim.
You can do it at home or bring him to a grooming parlor. Doing it at home is obviously less expensive but to get a good result you need to know how to do it properly and you need to use the right tools for the job.
There are lots of dog trimmers available and with practice you can achieve a great cut that will help your dog to feel better and look great.
A well groomed dog does not necessarily need his coat trimmed, even long haired dogs. People tend to trim because they believe that long haired breeds need it to stay cool in summer, which is not true. What is true is that it is harder to keep a long haired dog clean and tangle free all the time and clipping may become necessary in that instance.
How to Trim Your Dogs Hair
Trimming is relatively easy, you will need a pair of scissors, a metal comb and for the best results an electric trimmer.
The first or last step depends on your preference. Some people prefer to bath their dog before trimming them and some prefer after and a rare few do both.
Once you have the area set up and all the equipment you need there is a basic three step process to follow. Depending on your breed of dog you can alter the process as needed
Brush out as many tangles as you can and comb the hair cutting out any large matted area
If you are shaving your dog you should at this point thin out the hair using a scissors
Use the electric trimmer (in the direction of growth) to trim to the required length
Once you are done, brush the hair through with the comb and make any adjustments as needed.
