Dragonfly Jewelry

Dragonfly Jewelry

The dragonfly is a lovely and amazing insect and it has been celebrated in folklore, art – and dragonfly jewelry.

Dragonflies were some of the first winged insects to evolve, some 300 million years ago. They were here before the dinosaurs!

In the Paleozoic Era where they originated, they had wingspans of up to two feet! Some scientists think that
was because the high oxygen levels of the time that allowed dragonflies to grow to monstrous size.

Modern dragonflies have wingspans of only two to five inches.

Dragonfly jewelry is amazingly beautiful because the shape of the dragonfly is so lovely, and the colors are gorgeous. There is a long history and lore involving dragonflies. This symbolism makes any dragonfly jewelry gift more meaningful.

There are so many different kinds of dragonfly jewelry, and so much of it is inexpensive as well!

Native Americans and the sacred Dragonfly

Native Americans revered the dragonfly. Hopi and Pueblo Indians believed that the insect was a medicine totems and the dragonfly spirit would be called upon in healing ceremonies. Killing a dragonfly was forbidden by the Pueblo tribe. Navajo tribes focused on the element of water with the dragonfly. Plains Indians saw the insects as protection totems – and called upon them when they wanted strength.

Dragonflies show Us that Life is Fleeting – but Beautiful and Meaningful

Dragonfly Mythology around the World

Dragonflies are found world-wide and the myths around them abound. Romanians believed that they are horses that were possessed by the devil. There was much European prejudice against dragonflies – sometimes they were called the witches’ animals. They were mistakenly believed to hurt horses. Sometimes it was observed that horses would be stamping and kicking off insects. A common nickname was “Horse Stinger.” If dragonflies were there they would be blamed, although actually dragonflies eat some of the parasitic insects that were doing the actual ‘horse stinging’.

Dragonflies were highly revered in Asia. In Japan, the dragonfly was a symbol of summer and fall. Like with the Plains Indians, the Samurai used it as a symbol of power, agility and victory. The Chinese see the dragonfly as a good luck charm: associating it with harmony and prosperity.

Celtic Dragonfly Jewelry

Dragonflies were associated with fairies in Celtic mythology. They are naturals – they can fly so well that they are believed to be able to fly between dimensions!

In some myths the dragonfly was the steed of the fairy.

Celtic knots and dragonflies blend together to make beautiful jewelry.

Dragonflies are Cooler than Butterflies

Everyone loves butterflies with their beauty and their resurrection symbolism. Yadayadayada.

But for me – the dragonfly is just more mysterious and the jewelry is more striking and fun.

Nicknames for Dragonflies – Steeped in Mythology

I visited my friend Dianne recently, and was fascinated by her large collection of dragonfly jewelry. She is originally from New Orleans, and she called them “mosquito hawks.”

That made me think about other dragonfly nicknames. One of the most common is “snake doctor.” This term stems from the Southern US belief that dragonflies follow snakes, and stitch them together if they are hurt.

Other common nicknames for dragonflies are “devil’s darning needle,” “skeeter hawk,” “snake eyes” and “ear sewer”. I am sure each of those names has some folklore behind it.

Dragonfly Charms

Charm bracelets are just so much fun!

Why not add the mystery of dragonflies to yours?

Colorful Dragonfly Jewelry

The amazing piece of dragonfly jewelry featured here was created by the French jeweler René Lalique who was a major contributor to the Art Nouveau movement. He created many pieces that combined women, often with diaphanous drapery or flowing hair with some of nature’s most bizarre creations like snakes and insects. Hence this lovely piece of dragonfly jewelry.

The brilliant purple, green and blue colors of dragonflies, are ornamental and special! And the symbolism has been around about as long as the dragonfly itself.

There are many examples of dragonflies been used in jewelry and art, like with butterflies.

Dragonfly Jewelry is Naturally Beautiful

Based on One of the Magnificent Creatures in Nature

If you think the only pretty insects are butterflies – you have not met dragonflies.

From their massively strong jaws, to their amazing flying capabilities dragonflies are an amazing feat of nature.

So it is natural to use the dragonfly image in art – even if it is the art you wear with dragonfly jewelry.
