Fractured Fairy Tales

Fractured Fairy Tales Bring a Tickle to Our Beloved Fairy Tales

We have been telling tales since the beginning of time. Ancient people would hover around the roaring fire and tell of their friends and their foes – and they were not afraid to use magic to explain.

What are traditionally known as fairy tales began in Europe in the early 1600’s with the German Marchen (little stories) and French Contes. By the time the tales immigrated to England they were full of fairies, hence the term “fairy tales.”

Other authors created or modified stories from folklore to add to the fairytale repertoire. Most famously are the Grimm Brothers who gave us “Snow White and the 7 Dwarves,” and ” Rapunzel along with others. However, Charles Charles Perrault is credited with establishing the genre with tales such as Cinderella, and Puss in Boots. One of my favorite authors Hans Christian Andersen brought us the Princess and the Pea, and the Little Mermaid.

As wonderful as these tales are, it is tempting to play with them. In the last 50 years or so there has become a delightful trend to alter the traditional fairy tales and make stories with them that are just a little different.

Here are some of the most fun.

Grimm – the new Fractured Fairy Tale on the Block

Fairy Tales are Definitely not Just for Kids!

If you have not seen the Grimm series and you have any interest in myth, fairy tales, or just good guys and bad guys you are missing out.

The series focuses around Nick Burkhardt a Portland police detective. Nick discovers that he is not just a detective but that he comes from a long line of warriors named “Grimms.” They battle “Wesen” monster like creatures which are hidden in certain people.

Each week Nick and the other characters in the story encounter Wesen threats and overcome, as well as dealing with changes and conflicts in their own life.

Some Wesen are good, some are evil and some are evolving.

Everyone can see Wesen – Grimms just see them easier. This video shows Nick’s girlfriend Juliette showing that she can make her way around the Wesen world quite nicely.

Wolf and Pigs Grimm Style

One of the most famous fairy tales is the Wolf and the Three Little Pigs. The creators of Grimm portray this by creating a wolf like Wesen – Blutbad and a swine Wesen Bauerschwein that has been going on for as long as they have existed. In this episode Monroe, a Blutbad and Nick’s friend finds a peaceful way to seek revenge against a Blutbaden chef that has been killing his friends in the famous Portland restaurant “Raven and Rose”.

Charlotte Henley Babb is an author and professor of literature at University of Phoenix. She says she is interested in “Writing fairy tales for grown-ups because we already know where the monsters are.”

Answering a Quora question about writing fracterd fairy tales she said ” Start with gender benders (Cinderfella), different points of view (the stepmother’s POV), change the setting (2030 in Star Trek universe), change the results (the princess gigged the frog and ate happily ever after).

Then go and do some research about non-Disney tales, older versions, other cultures, and find out what other people are doing with them. I have several story collections, and lots of other people are mining this resource.”

Grimm Humor

Not all Grimm stories are dramatic or scary. This tell of the characters under a love spell is very funny.

Juliette Becomes a Hexenbeist

With Ferocious consequence to her Witch Enemy

Unfortunately Juliette become a Hexenbiest – a witch in the course of the story. (Too long to tell here.) This is one of my favorite scenes – when she shows just how good she is.

  1. Very fun page, made a million memories come rushing back. Great experience watching some of the fractured fairy tales. Not a big fan of Grimm, really too dark for me. But the page is so joyful, able to skim over that. LOL.

  2. Fascinating page! Fairy tales certainly can become twisted or fractured fairy tales as you call them – LOL
