Fresh Herbs Storage

Ways To Help Your Herbs Stay Fresher Longer

What is the benefit of having fresh herbs or keeping herbs for longer periods? After all, the majority of people are commonly only purchasing fresh herbs for a specific dish and do not use them routinely. Often disposing of the unused herbs. This is often because they know that the herbs will start to wilt and fade inside a few days.

One of the problems with getting fresh herbs is keeping them fresh. Often times they can go bad or lose much of their fresh taste as they sit in the refrigerator over time. There are many cultures like the Japanese that conceive that freshness is the key to first-class cooking. It is also true that freshness normally contributes itself to more subtle flavors in foods. This is why maintaining everything as fresh as conceivable is essential.

If, however, they are using something that will help to keep the herbs fresher longer, well then the likelihood of those herbs being applied in other dishes increases dramatically. This is great for people who do not like to waste or who may enjoy holding an array of fresh herbs on hand without having to purchase them every few days from the store (an expensive undertaking) or care for them in a kitchen or container garden.

Freezing Fresh Herbs is Another Great Way to Keep Fresh Taste Longer

Very Easy and Lasts Much Longer

I will frequently freeze my fresh herbs. It really is easy to do. After I have picked from my garden towards the end of the season, I wash and hang by the stem end, them to dry. Once dried. I place them on a cookie sheet, separated, not touching and put them on a shelf in my freezer, uncovered. I leave them there about a half hour, It allows them to become rigid since now frozen. You can store them in your freezer in a baggie or a storage container.

They almost immediately. So when you are ready to make your next dish, just pick what fresh herbs you want and you are all set to go.

Another really neat trick, after cleaning your herbs, chop into small pieces like you would cook with and pack into an ice cube tray. Then fill the tray with water and freeze like ice cubes. Once frozen dump them into a labelled bag and keep in your freezer. When you are ready to cook. Each herb ice cube will be ready to flavor your dish.

I found a video that demonstrates both techniques. Freezing your herbs is a great way to have wonderful aromatic and savory fresh herbs all year long with very little effort.

Of Course There is One More Way to Have Fresh Herbs

You Can Grow them Outdoors

Herbs make some of the most beautiful potted plants around. And they are very hardy and easy to grow. One word of caution, whether you grow them in a pot or in the ground, it is advisable to keep them in a container of some sort. Herbs are very prolific and will take over any garden you plant them. Especially vining varieties like mint. Just plant the pot right in the ground in your garden and the roots will be contained and control the spread.

My favorite way of outdoor herb growing is in a flower pot, A half whiskey barrel is my personal favorite for combinations of herbs. I plant them and keep them right on the deck right outside my kitchen door. It makes the readily available and always fresh.

And did you know that many herbs deter bugs and mosquitoes and ants. Really! Try laying a sprig of lavender across your entryway and you’ll never have ants in the house. And plant parsley and lavender with your roses and bugs and infestation are a thing of the past. You can even cut them like fresh flowers and include them in flower arrangements in your home.

Herbs are amazing and wonderful to include in your garden and home and cooking.
