Gifts for Her : Diamonds, Emeralds and Sapphires – Oh My! (Relax.)

“Big girls need big diamonds.”

That lesson in gift-giving is courtesy of the late Dame Elizabeth Rosemond Taylor, DBE aka Elizabeth or Liz Taylor (1932 – 2011), famous British-American actress. (Source: brainyquote.com)

Her well-publicized love affair with jewelry , especially diamonds, was practically scandalous.

If you are thinking of buying your “big girl” diamonds or a precious stone as a gift, here is a mini-intro.

Archaeologists have learned from digging up rings, seals, jewelry, etc. that precious and semi-precious stones were highly valued commodities from the earliest civilizations. However, a precise date for when people started using gems to adorn themselves or exchanging them as gifts has never been determined. The closest approximation is based on the discovery of Sumerian jewelry found at Ur that dated back to 2500 B.C. As to the art of making jewelry, Egyptians have been given the credit.

– Diamond is harder than any other known substance.

– Emerald is among the most prized gemstones.

– Sapphire (from sappheiros, meaning “blue stone”) gets its color from traces of cobalt.

Alternatives to Jewelry Gifts

On the other hand, if your special lady is not as “high maintenance” as Ms. Taylor, or she never learned that particular lesson, there are several alternatives to diamonds, emeralds and sapphires. So relax!

Perfumes and flowers are nice; as are paperweights and feng shui products like tabletop water fountains or wind chimes. Art, figurines or collectibles would be lovely. Relaxation and aromatherapy products so she can pamper herself are also marvelous. Here are few gift ideas that would be on my wish list.
