Gingerbread house dough needs to be firm with no leaveners so it will bake flat and make good building blocks for your house.

9 cups general purpose flour
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground ginger
1 teaspoon nutmeg

Preheat oven to 350 degrees
In a large bowl, combine flour and salt
In a saucepan over low heat melt the margarine, add corn syrup, spices and brown sugar and stir until combined and smooth
Remove from heat and add to flour and salt mixture and let cool till you can manipulate with your hands, then combline and manipulate till the dough pulls away from the sides of the bowl
Wrap the dough in a dishtowel and let it sit for 30 minutes
Roll out to 1/4 inch thick on a floured surface and cut out your pieces
Spray your cookie sheet with cooking spray and transfer the pieces to it
Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, until pieces are browned and hard to the touch
Remove from oven and let cool completely before you touch them, then remove from the cookie sheet.

  1. While I love the flavor of gingerbread goodies I would not have the patience, nor the talent, to create a gingerbread house!

  2. How beautiful! I don’t have much luck building gingerbread houses however my granddaughter is a wiz at it.

  3. I love those keepsake houses. They are gorgeous! I’ll have to look into those gingerbread house cookie cutters, though. Love the idea of being able to make our own without having a pattern to cut the pieces from.

  4. I’ve always wanted to make a gingerbread house, I find them delightful for the eyes! Since I’m a bad cook – I could burn food without fire – I’d opt for those gingerbread houses in kits. And even more, I just found out that there’s a Christmas train kit available. The Christmas train lover that I am would be sooooooooooooooo happy with a couple of these food craft sets!

I think gingerbread houses make the holidays last for more than just one day. You have given us a lot of beautiful ones to think about, making one from scratch using the kit you provided is a lovely idea – and thanks for the gingerbread house recipe! I also liked the Multicolored 2 Story 13″ Gingerbread House and Christmas Village.
