When I came across these earrings, I was quite impressed with the beautiful blue stones and I thought they looked stunning in the sterling silver setting.

The blue color is so deep and I was curious as to why they had gold flecks throughout the stones. I decided to do some research on Lapis Lazuli to find out the history of this gorgeous gemstone.

I was surprised to find out how long Lapis Lazuli has been used in jewelry. This stone has been recovered over and over again at ancient burial sites throughout Mesopotamia, Egypt and Greece. Ancient cultures considered Lapis Lazuli to be a precious gem, similar to Sapphire. Even the burial chamber of King Tut was lavishly decorated with Lapis. The rich color pigment contained in the stone led to it being ground and used for make-up, medicines and the dyeing of garments

The formation of Lapis Lazuli is very complex and consists of several different minerals including Lazurite, Calcite and specks of Pyrite, which are the flecks of gold that sparkle in the earrings. This combination makes Lapis technically a rock rather than a mineral. Depending on the amount of sulfur contained in the stone, Lapis can range in color from light blue to a very dark blue. It is a fragile and porous stone and must be handled with care to protect it from harm.
