Natural Mosquito Repellents

Mosquitoes often times carry life threatening diseases such as Lyme Disease, West Nile Virus, Malaria and Encephalitis. They can also infect your animals with tapeworm.

Repellents containing DEET are not safe to use on children. I wouldn’t even recommend that it be used on adults! DEET contains toxins that when used in high doses can cause death, seizures and severe illness when combined with other active ingredients like pesticides. DEET is also not good for the wildlife around us. It is toxic to birds and aquatic life. So if you spray some on you, it gets in the atmosphere and affects other living creatures, and if you wear it while swimming, you’ll be infecting aquatic life in those waters. It’s just not a good idea to use DEET products at all.

I did some research and found some natural mosquito repellents that will not harm you, your children or the wildlife around you.

1. Catnip or Catnip Oil
Iowa State University research showed that the essential oil in catnip is 10 times more effective than DEET at repelling mosquitoes. You can crush the leaves and rub them on you, or apply the oil directly to your skin.

2. Citronella Essential Oils that you find in most local health food stores.

3. Eating lots of garlic and taking the vitamin supplement B1 can help repel mosquitoes.

4. Lemon Balm
You can crush the leaves and rub them directly on your skin.

5. Peppermint
You can buy peppermint essential oils (dilute with coconut or organic soy oil if too harsh for your skin), crush fresh peppermint leaves and rub them on your skin, use peppermint soaps and shampoos, or keep whole peppermint leaves in pockets of your clothing).

6. Organic Soy Oil

7. Neem Oil
Neem oil has been deemed more effective than DEET for repelling mosquitoes by the US National Research Council during a study they performed.

8. Lavender Essential Oil
You will most likely need to add this to coconut or organic soy oil, as it can cause irritation to your skin when used full strength.

9. Place Lotus in pools or tubs of water to keep mosquitoes away when entertaining outdoors.

10. Plant marigolds in abundance around your home and back yard. They are terrific mosquito repellents, colorful and edible, too!

So the next time you plan on spending time outdoors, think about your health and well-being, as well as that of your children, other family and friends and the wildlife around you. Stay safe while keeping dangerous mosquitoes off of you.

You can use many of the fresh herbs on your pets, too, however I suggest you study online whether any of them are harmful. Sometimes cats cannot tolerate the same things that dogs can, and so on.
