What are nesting dolls?

These decorated wooden dolls “with a secret” are also called matryoshka dolls or babushka dolls. They are recognized even in the countries thousand miles away from Russia. Taking a Russian nesting doll back home is a must among tourists from Europe and the United States alike.

What is a babushka doll?

A matryoshka doll (Russian: матрёшка; IPA: [mɐˈtrʲɵʂkə] ( listen), matrëška), also known as Russian nesting doll or Russian doll, refers to a set of wooden dolls of decreasing size placed one inside another.

What does Matryoshka mean in Russian?

Russian Babushka Matryoshka Dolls. Russian. Babushka Dolls. Originally called Matryoshka dolls, from the Latin word ‘mater’, meaning mother.

Matryoshka Dolls, Nesting Dolls or Stacking Dolls

A set of matryoshkas consist of a wooden figure which separates, top from bottom, to reveal a smaller figure of the same sort inside, which has, in turn, another figure inside of it, and so on.

“The first Russian nested doll set was made in 1890 by Vasily Zvyozdochkin from a design by Sergey Malyutin, who was a folk crafts painter at Abramtsevo. Traditionally the outer layer is a woman, dressed in a sarafan, a long and shapeless traditional Russian peasant jumper dress. The figures inside may be of either gender; the smallest, innermost doll is typically a baby turned from a single piece of wood. Much of the artistry is in the painting of each doll, which can be very elaborate. The dolls often follow a theme; the themes may vary, from fairy tale characters to Soviet leaders. The matryoshka dolls are often referred to as “babushka dolls”, “babushka” meaning “grandmother” or “elderly woman”.

Collecting these Nesting Dolls is not only a wonderful hobby but can also can be collectible investments for the future. Some of them do go up in value based on the grouping, where they were made, how many were made, and of course condition. They should be treated with care if you want them as a valuable collectible. They can be just a great gift for someone or even played with if that is what you desire to do as well.

Nesting dolls now are quite varied and are not only a Russian or foreign item to the USA. This idea of stacking has become quite popular in the United States. Many are produced elsewhere and resemble popular American characters from movies and comics such as Marvel Superheros, Wizard of Oz Dolls, Star Wars Characters, and so many more!
