How to Do Pilates Exercises

If you have been wondering how to do Pilates exercises, let’s first take a look at what Pilates is. Pilates is a form of exercise that was developed by Joseph Pilates. As a child Joseph was sick and as such, couldn’t exercise in a normal way.

He created this gentle form of exercising that his body could perform and soon found that he was becoming both healthier and more muscular. He then developed the exercise routines that we now know as Pilates so that other people could also enjoy and benefit from this type of exercise.

Of course, Pilates is not just for sick people, anyone can enjoy the many benefits that Pilates offers. Pilates focuses on strengthening the core or abdominal muscles.

By strengthening the core of your body trunk your posture will improve and your back will be strengthened. Some equipment may be used for some specific exercises, such as resistance bands or exercise balls, but many of the poses are simply performed on the floor.

Benefits of Pilates

Pilates is a great way to flatten the stomach, which is why it is quite popular for new Moms. It is also a great way to improve flexibility and tone the body.

By strengthening the abdominal muscles, the rest of your muscles all over the body will also be strengthened and toned and your overall balance will improve. Pilates is a type of exercise that can be performed by anyone at any age and of any fitness level, including seniors, children and pregnant women.

Some of the benefits you will receive from Pilates are similar to those you receive with yoga, such as a leaner physique, increased flexibility, strengthened immune system, overall better health and weight loss. You can adapt Pilates to suit your fitness level and other needs.

You can attend a Pilates class at a gym or you can learn to do it at home from a DVD or book. It really is a type of exercise that is suitable for everyone.

Pilates has six basic principles:

1. Centering – the focus of Pilates is on the core, also known as the ‘powerhouse’ of the body.

2. Breath – breathing air in and out slowly and fully is important during Pilates movements.

3. Control – you will control each movement to use muscles in a specific way.

4. Concentration – you are required to focus your full attention on each movement and breath.

5. Flow – overtime you will be able to perform each movement gracefully and easily.

6. Precision – every movement requires every part of the body to have its correct place for maximum benefit.

Stop thinking about how to do Pilates exercises and start learning how to do Pilates. Find a class near you or buy a DVD and do Pilates from home.

If you prefer, you can attend a class and also use a DVD at home on other days to gain more practice. The sooner you are performing each movement correctly, the sooner you will begin to see the many benefits of Pilates.
