Poinsettias Create Christmas Miracles

I was mad. Two men – a boarding home manager and my ex-husband – who were supposed to be taking care of my adult autistic son were not doing it to my expectations.

I was in a rage – they had not given him the medication he needed. I felt used and abused – and worse for any woman I felt not listened to. They were RIGHT THERE – they could have got it for him. I finally drove over the bridge, putting out the gas and toll and dealing with my night-vision which is not as good as it should be these days. I stood in line at the 24 hour pharmacy, lost my phone and felt put upon.

Actually I ended up not feeling as grumpy as I could be. That is because right before going to my son I had taken a friend to a Home Depot – driving the complete other way. In the midst of my anger and frustration I was called to the poinsettias. I picked up one for my friend – the woman I call my Fijian mother. She was very mad at her roommate who had lost his keys and was sitting outside the apartment “learning his lesson.” I told him to be gentle to him, I have lost my keys so many times I said I could never have a parrot because I would scream at after it called out “Where’s my keys? Where’s my glasses? Where’s my purse?” I told him when you lose a lot of things, you have something on your mind.

I picked up a poinsettia for her. She loved it.

And I picked up a poinsettia for my neighbor who was dealing with family meanness so bad it was hurting his heart. I have not given it to him yet – I hope it gives him comfort.

And I picked up a poinsettia for the board and care owner.

Plus I picked up a poinsettia for myself. I felt lighter by the end of all that.

When I went to the board and care I gave the man his poinsettia. I also gave him the meds and he said he would give them to my son when he woke up. He told me my son woke up several times a night, wandering about. I realized again that he had his hands full with my son and was grateful that we had found a place like this to help us out for now. What could have become confrontational became pleasant.

When I came home I started looking up information about the myths of the poinsettia. The poinsettia is the official flower of Mexico.

The legend is of a little Mexican girl named Pepita who was too poor to buy a real present for baby Jesus on Christmas Eve. Much like the little drummer boy gave him what she had from her heart, she picked up branch of green leaves from a shrub as she walked to church on Christmas Eve. She lovingly formed the leaves into a bouquet and watched in wonder as it turned into a beautiful red flower of the poinsettia. The poinsettia became known as the Flores de NocheBuena, and became the official Christmas flower of Mexico.

I do not know what is going to happen with my beautiful son. I do know like J.R.R Tolkien said ” All that wander are not lost.” I know that he is cared for by the hand of Providence.

I do know that giving and openness is healing.

Maybe the next poinsettia I give is to my ex-husband. :)

Christmas is supposed to be an easy time. I think it is hard because it is never “perfect.”

But it is easier if we remember the child-like wonder that we greeted the season at it’s best. That was the truth of birth and that will be the truth on our death bed.
