Pokemon Go Brings the Fun of Pokemon to A New Generation

This week Pokemon Go brought a new joy to family and the world. I wanted to share some time with my adult sons for free or cheap, and my youngest son brought a Pokemon Go to the Berkeley Rose Garden. He said that it had got him outside, and that he was learning about the world around him as well as getting a chance to catch Pokemons! Pokemon Go is an app on a phone – free for now – where Pokemons show up all over the world, as well as information about the places you are visiting.

I’ll never forget the fun my boys had with playing Pokemon cards when they were little. Pokemon came out in February 27, 1996. My boys insisted that I taking them to a gaming store, where the owner was being inundated with calls about when they would get Pokemon calls in. Pokemon cards became quickly collectible, and there was a game with some elaborate rules that the kids could play too. My eldest son had a very indulgent grandfather who would go onto eBay and buy him all the cards he wanted. The highest price ever for a Pokemon was in the five digits! My son’s grand-dad was not THAT indulgent but sometimes it seemed very close. I’ll never forget my son saying “my Snorlax is hecka powerful.”

Pokemon expanded into an empire, with movies, TV shows and games. But the new generation did not understand the joy of Pokemon – until Pokemon Go came out.
