Salvador Dali Fine Art and Collectibles
I’ve been fascinated by Salvador Dali’s art ever since I first saw his renowned piece, The Persistence of Memory, at the the Museum of Modern Art in New York when I was a youngster. Something about those melting clocks…
I didn’t know too much about art back then, I was just a child. But I did know that his work was extraordinary.
It spoke to me in a quiet way, a voice I had never heard before.
I was not particularly interested in ‘modern art’. At that age I didn’t really understand the differences between ‘kinds of art” anyway.
I just liked it.
Just as I like comedian Stephen Wright’s humor.
Especially about Salvador Dali.
He says, “Salvador Dali went fishing.
He had a dotted line. He caught every other fish.”
It might not be everybody’s cup of tea, but I think it’s funny.
Guess it’s an acquired taste!
The Persistence of Memory by Salvador Dali
Salvador Dali (1904–1989) is remembered as one of the most prolific and versatile artists of the 20th century.
He is most famously known for his painting, but was also well versed in sculpture, printmaking, advertising, fashion and of course, filmmaking with the likes of Alfred Hitchcock and Luis Buneul.
He was also well known for his flamboyant personality.
Dali is associated with the Surrealist movement, although formally expelled in 1934 by the group for his somewhat reactionary views on politics.
They say he was larger-than-life, starting his first drawing lesson at 10 years old, and given to violent outbursts toward his family and friends.
Fun Fact About Salvador Dali and Walt Disney
Salvador Dali and Walt Disney were friends and collaborators.
They were two incredibly creative visionaries with completely different visions.
Walt Disney said, “If you can dream it, you can do it,”
and Dali is quoted: “I don’t do drugs. I am drugs.”
Both began drawing at a young age.
Dali held his first public exhibit at 14 with his charcoal drawings.
Disney drew cartoons for print advertising.
They collaborated on an animated short titled “Destino” beginning in 1945.
They both grew impressive mustaches.
