Mattie had moved from Apple Valley PA to Ohio 3 years before after a break up with her Beau, Gideon. She had made a surprise visit to his house during the holidays and found him hugging an Englisher woman. He told her she needed to find some one else.

Mattie’s brother James and family lived in Ohio so she went there and opened a cake decorating store. She loved baking and decorating special cakes for others. She had met a shy man named Sol and they were a couple. Sol liked to hunt and spent lots of time in the woods.

One day Mattie helped a customer load a cake she had made and stopped off at a store for a minute. They saw smoke and found her store was on fire. Mattie was afraid her niece might be inside and ran in. She was overcome with smoke inhalation and wound up unconscious in the hospital.

Gideon heard about the fire and hurried to the hospital. It was late at night by time he got there and she was asleep so he sat and held her hand a few minutes. Sol, who been on a hunting trip, came in and saw him.

Mattie is persuaded by her parents to return to PA for a few weeks when she gets out of the hospital. While there she runs into Gideon. He tells her the truth about why he broke up with her but she isn’t sure she believes him.
