The Habit

The Habit, A Book Review

The Habit is written by Susan Moore. It is a book of recollections from the past and the current days of having an elderly parent.

Susan is an Artist and married to an Actor. They have a daughter and twin sons. Susan has a brother Felix who lives a couple hours away and a sister Collett who lives in England.

Susan’s Mom has decided she wants to be an Orthodox Christian Nun. She has lived in a senior complex on 10th floor. Her driving has gotten bad and they have to take her car away. She is also sick and diagnosed with rectal cancer resulting in radiation treatments, chemo, and finally a colostomy. She ran Susan crazy with needing stuff NOW, Kleenex, certain toilet paper, wipes, holy oil etc.

This resulted in her having to move to an assisted Living home. She had recovered and was considered cancer free.

When her mom was inducted as a Nun her name was changed to Mother Brigid. One day she hires a driver to take her a couple hours away to her Church for a special service. She gets tangled in her habit and falls and breaks a hip and arm. This requires therapy and finally a move to another facility.

Susan tells of the problems with HMO, Medicare, Hospitals, doctors, and other facilities.

This book was ok. Just not my kind of reading.
