The Lowdown on Denim
Book Review: The Lowdown on Denim
The Lowdown on Denim is written by Tanya Lloyd Kyi.
Levi Strauss made the first denim pants to sell to the gold miners during the gold rush. The miners needed durable clothes. He had come to California from New York to make his fortune in selling supplies. By the time the gold ran out he was well on his way.
Silver was then discovered in Nevada. Jacob Davis was making and selling work pants and he came up with a way to make them more durable. He had the idea of putting rivets at the pockets and seams to reinforce. He was afraid some one would steal his idea and he did not have the money to patent it. He talked with Strauss and together they patented the idea. They called them waist overalls and they sold for about $1.50 a pair.
In 1899 Lee started making jeans and then jackets and dungarees similar to overalls today. For really dirty jobs he came up with the idea of combining pants and shirt and called them union-alls.
During WW1 the soldiers were fitted with union-alls supplied by Lee.
Strauss was making cowboy pants. In 1926 they started using zippers instead of buttons and called then Whizits.
We have come through lots of changes from the bell bottoms, to hip huggers, low riders, boot cut, and ripped ones to name a few, and they are still popular today.
