Top Ten Ladies Perfumes

Best Perfumes for Women—Top Ten Ladies Fragrances

Best Women’s Perfumes of All Time

For centuries, women have used perfumes and perfumed products in one form or another for health and beauty benefits. Some fragrances become popular because they are endorsed by celebrities, some because they revolutionized the perfume industry, and some because they are so distinctive and great-smelling.

I have put together a list of the top ten ladies’ perfumes of all time. As a bit of a perfume fanatic, I have combined my own favorites with the the best-selling perfumes of the last 30 years—from the classics, such as Chanel No. 5, to Thierry Mugler’s iconic Angel to the hottest celebrity perfumes of recent years. My list includes perfumes of all types to suit many different tastes.

I hope you find this guide to the bestselling ladies perfumes to be an entertaining read and a useful guide to buying a special perfume or a signature scent.

1. Chanel No. 5 Perfume for Women

The most popular perfume of all time, Chanel No. 5 is still one of the best-selling women’s fragrances worldwide, and has been since it was first released in 1921. How has it endured for so long? Its most famous fan was Marilyn Monroe, giving this fragrance a big head start. Any perfume described as Ms. Monroe’s bedtime scent was bound to be a hit.

As for the perfume itself, at first introduction (especially to anyone who does not often wear perfume) it can seem a little bit underwhelming in comparison to more recent fragrances. The truth is that No. 5 by Chanel is a timeless scent, slightly strong and floral, that will appeal to any woman who wants to feel feminine and alluring in a classic way.

You might enjoy these fragrances in the same classic, elegant scent family.

Baghari, by Robert Piguet, is another re-released vintage scent. Originally released in 1950, Baghari has the depth of a retro perfume with some of the vanilla, floral hints of a more contemporary fragrance.

Shalimar, by Guerlain for Woman is yet another iconic fragrance. It has a warm, vanilla base and the classic floral scent that made Chanel No. 5 famous, yet it is perhaps a little more sensual and Oriental.

2. Angel by Thierry Mugler

Angel Perfume for Women by Thierry Mugler is a best-selling perfume, yet it remains relatively unknown. I have it on my list because the scent of Angel is simply iconic. That might sound over-the-top, but for a designer’s first fragrance, Angel’s success was astonishing.

Released in the early 1990s, the scent may be a bit young to have achieved iconic status, but Angel is really quite an unusual perfume. Hugely popular, it is not to everyone’s tastes, but in my opinion this perfume belongs on the list.

As for the fragrance itself, Angel will mislead you. There’s nothing angelic about it: It’s loud and strong and in no way for the light-hearted. Angel is simultaneously sweet, seductive, and shocking. So if you dare, Angel is for you. By the way the video made by Eva Mendes is outstanding! Watch it and see for yourself.

Be warned: This is a love-it-or-hate-it fragrance!

Who can wear Angel? This is one for the person who likes to be noticed. You need to be confident to wear it well, so it’s not for the wallflower type who sits in the corner. If you love to be a head-turner and the life of the party, then Angel is for you!

Perfumes Similar to Angel

Many perfumers have tried to create fragrances that smell like Angel, but personally I think there are few that have captured its unique qualities. Listed below are two perfumes that I find reminiscent of Angel and which may appeal to women who love it.

212 Sexy by Carolina Herrera is lighter than Angel, but they both have a nice dose of sandalwood. Unlike Angel, 212 has a musky opening.

Flowerbomb by Viktor & Rolf is a fresh, sweet scent that is Oriental and not overly girly.

3. Pure Poison by Christian Dior

Since this is my Top Ten list, I added some of my own personal favorites. I have always been a fan of Christian Dior’s perfume line. Pure Poison is a newer scent, but is my favorite of the Poison line. This is a seductive, night-time scent: sexy and often described as almost edible.

Poison’s smell is Oriental and floral, but it is also a confident scent—not for the wallflower type. This perfume will get you noticed, so if you want to stay in the corner then you should probably choose another scent.

Who should wear Pure Poison Perfume? This is perfect for girls’ night out. I think it is most suited for any woman under 40. It’s fun and seductive and slightly intoxicating. Use sparingly. A little goes a long way!

4. Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue Perfume

It’s impossible not to like Dolce & Gabbana’s Light Blue. It’s so light and easy to wear. This scent appeals to a much broader range of women than Angel’s distinct fragrance.

Light Blue has a lot of appeal: It works any time of the day or night, is subtle and not overpowering in any way, and is feminine without being a flowery mess.

Who should wear Light Blue? This is one of the few perfumes that I would say almost anyone could wear—from your best friend to your mom. The only one who should avoid it is the girl who is used to a heavier scent like Angel, simply because she would have to drench herself in Light Blue’s subtle fragrance just to be sure she’s wearing a scent at all!

5. Lovely by Sarah Jessica Parker

Sarah Jessica Parker probably has as much selling power in the fashion and perfume world as Oprah has in the rest of the world. While Sex and the City has been off our screens for quite some time now (excusing any questionable SATC movies), SJP still commands a huge and loyal fan base. You might think that is why Sarah Jessica Parker’s perfume is a bestseller—and you would be half-right. The other half of the reason is that the perfume really does live up to its name.

Lovely is no classic and it will never be iconic, but it deserves its place in the perfume department. It’s very wearable, feminine, and subtle, and it’s a firm favorite with women all over the world. So even if SJP’s hoard of fans originally bought the scent because of her name, they continue to buy it because it’s lovely!

Who should wear Lovely perfume? This is an ideal gift for your girlfriend, best friend, or sister. It’s also an affordable choice, compared with other best-selling scents.

6. Gucci by Gucci

I am a huge fan of the Gucci perfume line for women. I have worn almost all of them but my favorite by far is Gucci by Gucci. This is my everyday perfume of choice.

NOTE: There seems to be two of these fragrances that go by this name. The first, and the one that I fell in love with, was released at least 10 years ago. The packaging was plain black and it smelled amazing. However, another scent called Gucci by Gucci was released only a few years ago. The packaging for this one is a slightly different black box and the bottle is different. The scent is definitely not the same.

Don’t get me wrong: The new Gucci by Gucci is fine. Personally, however, if I can’t find the one I love, then I will buy Gucci Guilty instead. I am quite fond of Guilty as a perfume in general.

It’s disappointing that the original Gucci by Gucci is so hard to find. I have succeeded only twice in recent years. The new version is fine, but different. I wore the original Gucci perfume all day, every day and never bored of it. People always commented about how great it smelled.

Who should wear Gucci by Gucci? I have never met anyone who did not like this scent. I used to wear it every day. I would say this is a great scent for any woman. It is feminine and sensual and suits day or night wear.

If You Can’t Find Gucci by Gucci . . .

If you love the original Gucci by Gucci scent as much as I do, but also have a hard time finding it, try Guilty by Gucci instead. This is the scent I prefer when I cannot find Gucci by Gucci.

7. Obsession by Calvin Klein

Calvin Klein has several high-quality scents in their perfume line, and not all of them are among my personal favorites. Obsession, however, is a great all-around scent. Obsession is one of CK’s best-selling fragrances and you can’t really go wrong with this one.

Obsession is another good all-around perfume, great for day or night. Women of all ages wear this scent to great effect. This perfume makes a great gift!

8. Bright Crystal by Versace

Bright Crystal is an easy to wear, clean scent. It’s ideal for every day in the office. It’s a feminine perfume that appeals to a wide variety of women and is casual enough to wear to work without overpowering all of your co-workers.

Bright Crystal is a rare scent that is feminine without being overpowering, and perfect for everyday office wear. This fragrance makes a great gift for a co-worker.

9. I Love Love by Moschino

Some may find I Love Love to be an unusual choice for this list, but it is, in fact, a best-seller. I Love Love’s scent is reminiscent of Dolce & Gabbana’s Light Blue, with its subtle, clean, and fresh fragrance. It will bring springtime to mind. While I find it to be a younger scent—like a baby sister to Light Blue—I Love Love is an easy-to-wear daytime scent, feminine and soft, that will appeal to a wide range of women.

10. Girlfriend by Justin Bieber

Believe it or not, my top pick for the hottest perfume for women is Girlfriend by Justin Bieber. Soon after it was released it was the biggest selling celebrity perfume of 2014, with reports of a bottle of Bieber selling every minute. This should come as no surprise, considering that Bieber made over $3 million in three weeks with his first perfume.

The scent is flowery and fresh. Despite the age of the designer’s music fan base, a woman of any age can wear Girlfriend. It is not too sweet for an older woman, nor too musky for a teen. Another hit for Bieber!
