A place setting typically includes a dinner plate, a salad plate (or dessert plate), a bread and butter plate, a teacup, and a saucer. You can buy soup bowls, serving bowls, platters, and other pieces separately.

2. Open Stock. This is dinnerware that is sold by each individual piece. Sometimes you can mix and match colors and design patterns, or you can purchase all the same color or pattern. This option is ideal for a single person, or someone wanting to add a variety to what they already have at home. Mixing and matching colors and patterns is a fun way to make your table pop!

3. Boxed Sets. Most common boxed sets are available in 16 and 20 piece settings. These offer service for four, so you might want to purchase 2-3 boxed sets, so you’ll have enough for family and dinner guests. A 20-piece boxed set of dinnerware usually includes four each of dinner plates, salad plates, soup bowl, teacups, and saucers. A 16-piece boxed set typically includes a mug instead of a teacup and saucer.
