Typhoo Tea

Typhoo Tea Opens the door the World of British Tea

The Brits love their black tea, and yummy Typhoo tea is one of the best available.

There is a huge culture around tea, worldwide actually, but the British are famous for drinking it all day long, with tea for breakfast and high tea in the afternoon.

I wrote this article for my sister Carolyn, who was an avowed Anglophile and was bemoaning the fact that she had a hard time finding her beloved Typhoo tea. She alternated between this black tea, and P.G Tips another wonderful British black tea. Many people think Yorkshire Gold is the best, although for my dear sister Typhoo was the favorite.

Americans who have tried Typhoo Tea usually are SOLD on it – and it is great that Amazon carries it, as it is not readily available elsewhere outside of England.

Note: My beloved sister Carolyn passed away quietly in her sleep late December, 2012. I am glad that I had sent two boxes of Typhoo tea to her – decaf and caffeinated – just before she died.

Brits Love their Typhoo Tea!

90 cups of Typhoo Tea are consumed every SECOND in the United Kingdom.

Typhoo Tea

Typhoo tea launched in Birmingham, England in the early 1900’s.

The founder wanted to name their tea something that just tripped off the tongue, and the name Typhoo meant “doctor” in Mandarin. It is still manufactured in Moreton in the Wirral Peninsula in NW England.

It comes in a distinctive red box. The leaves are wrapped in foil to preserve the flavor.

Typhoo comes in tea bags or as loose leaf tea. Many tea lovers do not like decaf – but Typhoo tea is different. It is rich and full-bodied and is considered the most delicious black tea there is.

Typhoo Tea

Typhoo tea is made from the fannings – or leftover dust from grinding tea. The originator of typhoo tea found out that making tea from fannings actually makes a smoother, milder tea that can actually be gentle on your stomach.

The fannings have lower levels of tannin, and the founder John Sumner found that this tea helped his sister Mary Augusta in that regard.

All Brits Know Typhoo Tea – “Typhoo Tea puts the T in Britain”

Typhoo Tea Cards Brought British Culture with every sip

Typhoo Tea Advertising Card

So much culture came about around Typhoo tea that still exists in Britain today.

One example are the collectible Typhoo tea cards, which were advertising cards that were also educational and entertaining. For example, one series was of 25 characters from Shakespeare, another was of famous British historical events, another was just of birds of the English countryside. The figures that are used in the advertising are also popular and you will see them on cards, posters, and mugs.

A Lovely Electric Tea Kettle Makes Great Tea Safely

Tea Kettle Automatically Shuts Off after Use

I love using an electric tea kettle because it gets the water really hot and is safe. I am reassured by the automatic shut off feature – no need to worry about leaving the stove on and burning something! It can be used anytime you need boiling water.

When I was a hard working nursing student I almost caused a fire in my apartment building with an unattended hot plate that I had accidently left a cloth on so, I always look for anything that shuts off by itself to minimize something like that. I have been known to run back into the house to check out my Aroma Cordless tea kettle but that is my problem not the problem of the kettle – it does shut off automatically.

The Aroma AWK-115S Hot H20 X-Press 1-1/2-Liter Cordless Water Kettle has a handsome design and reasonable price. I like the way the handle attaches to the body of the kettle, it makes it less likely that this will break off during use.

PG Tips and Earl Grey are Two other Excellent British Teas

PG Tips is tied for the lead of my sisters favorite black British teas. It is a blend of Assam, Ceylon, and Kenyan black teas and is Rainforest Alliance Certified. One reviewer vividly described the wonderful aroma that you get when you open a box, nothing like the sterile smell of cheaper brands. Addicting in a good way, To mix it up I featured the loose tea variety.

Earl Grey tea is my sister’s third favorite tea. Earl Grey is a light and aromatic blend of fine black tea, scented with bergamot, a citrus fruit. I have heard it described as having a smokey flavor. Enjoyed by many, this is Amazon’s most favorite black tea.

Black Tea is Wonderful and Good for You

Typhoo Tea is Black Tea

Black tea is a variety of tea that is more oxidized than the other varieties such as white, green, Puerrh, yellow and oolong. According to Oxidation and Fermentation of Tea by Robert Heiss oxidation means “oxidation is a biochemical and ezymatic activity in which oxygen is absorbed by and subsequently causes changes to the host physical material. ” Apparently oxidation can occur naturally but over the thousands of years that we have been drinking tea we have learning to harness these forces to make the teas that we want. In the case of black tea, oxidation rooms insure that there are enough air exchanges to cause the tea to ferment properly.

Black tea has more caffeine than other kinds of tea, so of course you do not want to overdo it. But more and more we are learning of the health benefits of all kinds of tea including benefits to your circulation and to your immune system.

Yorkshire Tea is the Biggest Rival of Typhoo Tea

Is this the best tea available?

The fuss over Yorkshire Gold Tea by Taylors of Harrogate just shows how passionate British tea drinkers can be.
I had heard that that Yorkshire Tea was remarkable. in 2021 Yorkshire Tea was crowned Britain’s favorite on National Tea Day.

On Amazon one review read ” My favorite review Yorkshire Gold stated that “this is the finest premiere English tea. As you watch its golden amber descent into a teacup, complement with just the right amount of milk and perhaps a little sugar, you’ll appreciate what our colonial forefathers sacrificed when they chose to promote the United States as an American coffee-drinking nation. Now that those unpleasantries are behind us, we can reach again across the pond and together enjoy a cuppa! ”

Wow. All this before you leave the morning table!

However tea is a special taste.

My sister Carolyn, who inspired this article with her love of Typhoo Tea said that Yorkshire Gold Tea was a “big disappointment.” My favorite review Yorkshire Gold stated that “this is the finest premiere English tea. As you watch its golden amber descent into a teacup, complement with just the right amount of milk and perhaps a little sugar, you’ll appreciate what our colonial forefathers sacrificed when they chose to promote the United States as an American coffee-drinking nation. 1. I’m a devout tea drinker and I really appreciate a decent cuppa that is flavourful but not bitter. You have me intrigued by this typhoo tea… never heard of it before. And fascinated that the ‘dust’ residue of tea making produces such a fine brew.
Thanks for such an interesting tea story!
