What’s the Best Nikon Camera for Kids?

nikon waterproof camera for kidsSerious photographers know that Nikon is one of the top names in DSLR and compact cameras. But up until now, Nikon has never made a camera specifically geared to be simple enough for kids.

That changed in 2012 with the introduction of the Nikon Coolpix S30. The S30 is a compact point-and-shoot camera that is both waterproof and shockproof and can shoot still photos and HD video. If you’ve been looking for the best waterproof camera for kids that the adults can enjoy, too, the Nikon S30 may be the one for you.

Why the S30 is the Best Nikon for Kids
Nikon is promoting the S30 as a good camera for everyone in the family. Indeed, my 5-year-old daughter loves it, especially since we chose the pink model. (Boys may prefer the blue one, and it’s also available in white). Nikon has simplified the menus and controls so that almost everyone should be able to take great photos and videos without needing to wade through complicated menus and multiple screens. The camera has four buttons to the left of the 2.7-inch LCD screen on the back of the camera, and users simply select the button next to the menu option they want to choose.

The camera comes with a 10.1 MP CMOS sensor, a 3x zoom lens, and 720p HD video recording capabilities. Nikon has packed it with a variety of fun features, such as the ability to add digital frames around your photos, create in-camera albums or add effects such as soft focus, starbursts or fisheye effect. It also comes with special modes for shooting close-ups, food, fireworks, underwater, or time lapse images.

But Nikon didn’t stop at making the camera fun for kids. They also made it rugged enough to stand up to life with a child. It’s waterproof to 10 feet (great for the swimming pool or lake!), shockproof to 2.6 feet (so you won’t have to worry if little hands drop it) and dustproof. What more could a parent want in a camera for kids?

Happy shooting!
